The Artemis mission, in essence, is humanity's way of saying, "The Moon was lovely last time; let’s pop by again, but this time with more pizzazz!" It’s a daring escapade to return to that silvery orb in the sky, armed with rockets so large and powerful that they might as well come with "EXTREMELY DANGEROUS" written on the side in large, friendly letters. Unlike the Apollo missions, which were essentially "let’s visit and dash back," Artemis plans to stay for a proper snoop around, including visiting places on the Moon no one’s dared to step on before—like a tourist who insists on finding the one café that serves a decent cup of tea in a foreign city.

At the heart of Artemis is the Space Launch System, a rocket so colossal it could probably be spotted from orbit if one were already up there, sipping a delightful beverage in zero gravity. Then there’s the Orion spacecraft, which, despite sounding like a slightly pretentious holiday cruise liner, is actually the high-tech living room astronauts will use to hurtle through space. There’s also talk of a Moon-orbiting space station called Gateway, which, for all its impressive engineering, sounds suspiciously like a galactic bed-and-breakfast for weary travelers.

But Artemis isn’t just about going back to the Moon for nostalgia’s sake, oh no. It’s part of a grand plan for humanity to become the sort of species that takes long vacations to other planets. Scientists are figuring out how to use Moon dirt and ice to keep astronauts alive longer, which feels a bit like deciding to grow your own vegetables instead of relying on dodgy space takeaway. In short, Artemis is humanity’s next great adventure, one that might just inspire a generation of future explorers—or at least give them something very cool to watch on their space-age smartphones.
