Avatar is a film where blue people ride flying reptiles across a bioluminescent rainforest on a planet named Pandora, which is so stunningly beautiful it could make even the most jaded interstellar traveler cancel their holiday to the Andromeda Coast. While it dazzles the eyes with its neon flora, gravity-defying mountains and the sort of magical visuals that make one seriously consider investing in 3D glasses, it also manages to slip in a few lessons for the young and impressionable, assuming they can take a break from marveling at the giant, glow-in-the-dark trees.

First up, Avatar gently but insistently reminds us about environmental conservation, a concept that many species, humans especially, seem to treat with the same enthusiasm as a surprise exam in advanced quantum mechanics. Pandora is portrayed as a planet where every plant and creature is interconnected in a great web of life, which would be heartwarming if it weren’t constantly under threat from overzealous humans with bulldozers and dreams of resource exploitation. Children watching are subtly encouraged to love and protect their own planet—a place with fewer floating rocks, admittedly, but still quite nice if you give it a chance. The film practically whispers in their ears that nature isn’t something to be conquered but cherished, ideally before the neighborhood squirrels start organizing their own resistance movement.
