Christopher Columbus was a Genoese navigator in the service of Spain. In 1492, he set sail on his ship, the Santa Maria, to find a short sea way to Asia. That same year, his ship touched down on land (in the Caribbean islands). There, the sailors met the native americans and exchanged various gifts - for example, Columbus exchanged gold jewelry for a common comb. He returned to Spain and was received as a hero. Columbus didn't know he had discovered a new continent and although he sailed across the Atlantic three more times, he believed for the rest of his life that he had sailed to Asia.
