Elio is the sort of tale that begins with a perfectly ordinary boy and ends with intergalactic chaos, misunderstanding, and, naturally, some profound personal growth. Elio Solis, an 11-year-old with a penchant for imagining himself at the helm of cosmic adventures, is unceremoniously beamed into the Communiverse—essentially the galaxy’s most elaborate diplomatic mixer—and immediately mistaken for Earth’s supreme leader. What follows is a delightfully absurd escapade in which Elio must charm bizarre alien dignitaries, prevent interstellar catastrophe and figure out how to be himself without accidentally declaring war on a planet made entirely of sentient jelly. For children, it’s an entertaining and oddly comforting reminder that being mistaken for someone vastly more important than you feel doesn’t mean you can’t rise to the occasion.
