The animated film *Frankenweenie* tells the story of young Victor and his dearly departed dog, Sparky, who is—thanks to an enterprising use of lightning—both dearly and departed no more. In the grand tradition of "this might be a terrible idea but let’s try it anyway," Victor brings his beloved pup back from the beyond with a dash of gothic flair, an alarming amount of electricity, and, as usual, not a single adult paying proper attention.

On one hand, *Frankenweenie* is about the marvels of science. Not your dull, predictable science, where experiments are neatly contained in textbooks, but the sort where lightning bolts zap, creatures rise from the table and neighbors peer nervously over the hedge. The sort of science that reminds children that creativity means never asking, "Should I?" but rather, "How much longer till the lightning strikes?" It’s a love letter to enthusiasm and to passion—perhaps to a fault—and if it accidentally reanimates something, well, so much the better.

But at its core, it's also a story about a boy and his dog and how losing a pet makes one feel as if an essential gear has gone missing from the cosmic machinery. It dares to whisper that sadness is part of the package and that sometimes it takes a resurrection or two to work out what saying goodbye really means. And in the end, *Frankenweenie* manages to suggest that, while science can do marvelous things, nothing quite rivals the clumsy, imperfect marvel of being human and just trying one's best to make things right.
