How to Train Your Dragon is a book by British writer Cressida Cowell that came out in 2003 and started a whole universe of stories about vikings and dragons. Then a super popular cartoon was made and then a film. This is a story about a young Viking called Hikkup, who lives on the island of Berk, among rude and warlike relatives. They have long been catching and training dragons for their wars. Hikkup must, like all other boys in his tribe, catch and tame a dragon to prove that he is worthy of being a warrior. He is weaker than others, but he was lucky to find and tame the legendary dragon - the Night Fury, whom he calls Toothless. Although at first it seemed to everyone that this was a small helpless dragon - the same as Hikkup and this couple would never be able to pass the test.
The book and cartoon do a good job of depicting the historical era of the Vikings, who terrorized all of Europe from 800 to 1100 AD. They had wooden drakkar-like ships, horned helmets, fur vests, leather armor and a fighting spirit. But they didn't actually have dragons.
