The Hunger Games is an excellent book by Suzanne Collins, which was later made into a film, even several films (the latest - 2026 Sunrise on the Reaping). But the first book and the first film are, of course, the most interesting. The action of the novel takes place in a post-apocalyptic USA, where the dystopian state of Panem with the Capitol as its main district has emerged. In memory of the Great War (and as a lesson to other districts), the Capitol hosts an annual entertainment tournament - the Hunger Games - in which representatives of other districts compete to the last survivor. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, becomes a participant in the Hunger Games (her younger sister is chosen, but Katniss, wanting to protect her, volunteers). Together with a second participant from her district, Peeta Mellark, Katniss tries to survive in the arena.
