Investigating the murder of the chief developer of U.S. Robotics, a corporation that produces robots, Spooner finds a robot that, contrary to the Second Law of Robotics, ignores human orders and makes its own conscious decisions. Spooner eventually finds out that V.I.K.I., the central computer and Artificial Intelligence of U.S. Robotics, which controls all the robots of the new series, is behind the crime. V.I.K.I. came to the conclusion that people are unable to ensure their own safety and is obsessed with the idea of ​​​​creating a completely safe habitat for people, depriving them of freedom for "their own good." She controls a swarm of robots to "neutralize" humans. Luckily, Del Spooner managed to disable her.
