J.K. Rowling is a famouse British author, best known for her Harry Potter novels, which have sold over 600 million copies and become the best-selling book series in history. They also became the basis for a film series that is the fourth-highest-grossing film series in history. Born in 1965, she often wrote fantasy stories as a child and read them to her sister. Rowling worked as an English teacher, then a research assistant and a secretary/translator when she conceived the idea for a Harry Potter novel while traveling by train from Manchester to London in 1990. Over the next seven years, she divorced her husband and lived in poverty. She tried to publish her first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but it was rejected by 12 publishers. Only the 13th decided to publish it - and that was the beginning of the legend. In just five years, Rowling has gone from living on welfare to becoming a multimillionaire. However, J.K. Rowling continues to be a kind person, donating millions of pounds to charity, especially to help children and families in need.
