Who are Hercules and Hades?

Hercules is the hero of Disney's animated film of the same name. The son of Zeus and Hera, his origin story is the kind of tale that would leave any therapist shaking their head and reaching for a fresh notebook. Abducted from Mount Olympus by his rather cranky uncle Hades and unceremoniously turned mortal, Hercules retains his mighty strength but gains all the awkwardness of a teenage demigod dropped into a world not particularly impressed by superhuman feats. With the help of Pegasus—a horse with wings and, presumably, the patience of a saint—and Philoctetes, a trainer whose teaching style could generously be called "eccentric," Hercules embarks on a journey from klutzy disaster to hero material. Along the way, he discovers that being a hero isn’t all about punching hydras and flexing in marble statues; it’s about something much messier and infinitely more complicated, a lesson hammered home by his encounter with Megara, a femme fatale with a sharp wit and an even sharper sense of irony.

Hades is the main antagonist of the same cartoon and frankly, he might as well have stepped straight out of a stand-up comedy act in the Underworld. The fast-talking, flame-haired god of the dead has a fiery temper and a simmering grudge against his elder brother Zeus, whose relentless cheeriness and habit of throwing lightning bolts at things must make family reunions unbearable. For eighteen long years, Hades plots to overthrow Mount Olympus with a scheme so intricate that even the Fates have trouble keeping the paperwork in order. Complications arise, of course, when a prophecy warns him that a hero will thwart his plans, which is just the sort of inconvenient spoiler Hades really didn’t need. Unlike his original mythological counterpart, who was more moody than malicious, Disney’s Hades leans fully into villainy but does so with a comedic flair that makes him one of the most entertaining megalomaniacs in Disney’s arsenal. Equal parts charm and chaos, he’s proof that even when your job is ruling the Underworld, you can still aim for a bit of showmanship.
