Who are Megara and Mulan?
Megara (better known as Meg) is the woman in Disney's animated film Hercules. She is the sort of woman who could cut you down with a single word, then leave you wondering why you felt grateful for the experience. Once a reluctant errand-runner for Hades—think “underworld middle management” with worse benefits—Meg’s sole ambition was to untangle herself from a Faustian contract and retreat to a life of blissful isolation. Her snarky charm was an armor forged by a past riddled with heartbreak and regret, particularly involving a boyfriend who redefined the phrase “it’s not you, it’s me.” But then along came Hercules, an earnest golden retriever of a demigod who somehow managed to bulldoze through her cynicism with sheer sincerity. Against all odds (and her better judgment), Meg began to suspect that maybe, just maybe, the universe wasn’t entirely awful after all.
Mulan (or Fa Mulan) is the girl of Disney's animated film Mulan. She is not one to sit idly by while life handed her an unacceptable script. When her aging father was summoned to war against the fearsome Shan Yu, Mulan decided the best solution was to throw societal norms to the wind, disguise herself as a man and join the army in his place—a move that was equal parts brave, reckless and guaranteed to upset her ancestors. Armed with wit, grit and a dragon with dubious qualifications as a mentor, Mulan carved her path as both a warrior and a legend. While she wasn’t technically born into royalty, nor did she marry into it, Mulan’s heroics earned her a spot among Disney’s official princesses—proving once and for all that saving China is, in fact, a résumé-worthy skill.
