Lewis Carroll, though his birth certificate insisted on calling him Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born in 1832, in the quaint and utterly forgettable village of Daresbury, England. The third of eleven children in a family that seemed determined to start its own small society, young Charles quickly developed a knack for storytelling, partly to entertain his siblings and partly to maintain his sanity in the cacophony of a crowded household. Brilliantly odd from an early age, he had a passion for puzzles, mathematics and other pursuits that made most people’s eyes glaze over. This led him to Christ Church College at Oxford, where he dutifully balanced a life of teaching, inventing clever ways to amuse himself and exploring the emerging art of photography.

Of course, history doesn’t remember him for his love of equations or his remarkable ability to juggle careers. Instead, Lewis Carroll etched his name into literary legend with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a story inspired by a real girl named Alice Liddell and peppered with an exquisite mix of whimsy and nonsense. It was a book that proved to children everywhere that imagination was not just a tool for boredom but a portal to entirely new worlds where logic could go on holiday. Carroll’s enduring charm lies in his unapologetic embrace of the absurd, teaching kids (and, frankly, adults) that life is much more enjoyable when it doesn’t always make sense.
