Michelangelo, born in 1475, in the charmingly unremarkable town of Caprese, Italy, was the kind of child who turned every blank surface into a masterpiece—much to the annoyance of his schoolteachers. While his father had grand ideas of him entering the family business (something governmental and dreadfully boring), young Michelangelo had other plans involving marble, paint and redefining what humans thought art could be. By the age of 13, he was already learning the ropes of the Renaissance art world, quickly gaining the attention of the powerful Medici family, who decided, “This one might actually be worth keeping an eye on.”

From sculpting the towering David to painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling (a project that involved far too much lying on scaffolding), Michelangelo worked with a level of intensity that made everyone else look lazy. He even designed parts of St. Peter’s Basilica, proving he could handle a cathedral as easily as a chisel. His life is a reminder to kids everywhere that being a bit obsessive about your passion, even to the point of painting on ceilings, can lead to greatness. After all, Michelangelo didn’t just create art—he made the world stop and stare.
