Mickey Barnes had a rather peculiar job—he died. A lot. And every time he died, a brand-new Mickey popped out of a cloning machine, fresh as a daisy and just as bewildered about the meaning of existence as the last one. The problem, of course, was that the previous Mickey wasn’t too keen on being replaced, leading to a deeply philosophical and slightly ridiculous identity crisis. Set on the frozen wasteland of Niflheim (which, despite the fancy name, was about as welcoming as a fridge that forgot to defrost), Mickey 17 explores what happens when a man realizes he’s both infinitely replaceable and, inconveniently, still himself. Along for the ride are a no-nonsense soldier who may or may not tolerate Mickey's continued existence, a best friend who probably should have stopped being his best friend several deaths ago and a mission commander with the kind of leadership skills that make one long for the warm embrace of an airlock.

Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the film takes the notion of identity, squishes it through a darkly comedic blender and serves it up with a side of stunning visual effects. It asks questions like, “What does it mean to be human?” and “At what point do you stop bothering to remember your own death count?” Mickey 17 isn’t just science fiction—it’s a bureaucratic nightmare of existential dread wrapped in a stylish, futuristic jumpsuit. With elements of satire, biting social commentary and enough near-death experiences to make a cat nervous, it’s a film that ensures you’ll never look at job security—or cloning—the same way again.
