Minji, born in the whimsically named Mancheon-ri, Dong-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon, South Korea, is the sort of K-pop star who seems to have wandered off the pages of an exceptionally heartwarming novel. With a family as diverse as her interests—an older brother, a younger sister and a mom whose cooking she holds in the same esteem as Baskin Robbins’ New York Cheesecake—Minji embarked on her stardom journey during middle school, signing up with Source Music and promptly becoming the face of the Plus Global Audition in 2019. A graduate of Hanlim Multi Art School (class of 2023, in case you missed the banners), she juggles acting, journaling and dreaming up pajama parties like it’s all part of some grand cosmic checklist. She’s also known as NewJeans’ “cleanup queen,” proving that stardom doesn’t preclude an excellent knack for tidying. With a fondness for the sea, a soft spot for dogs and a habit of hugging dolls in her sleep, Minji reminds us all that life’s quirks—like reacting in English because of time spent in Canada—are just as charming as the shiny bits. Above all, she embodies the idea that success is best served with a scoop of ice cream and a well-loved book.
