Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, was the sort of child who made everyone else feel a bit inadequate. By the age of five, he wasn’t just playing piano and violin but was already composing music that people actually wanted to listen to—an accomplishment most adults never achieve. His father, Leopold, was a musician who quickly realized his son’s genius and whisked young Mozart and his equally talented sister, Nannerl, off on a whirlwind tour to impress the kings and queens of Europe. They were basically the rock stars of the 18th century, minus the pyrotechnics.

Mozart went on to write over 600 pieces of music, everything from symphonies to operas and probably a few things just to see if anyone was paying attention. Despite his extraordinary talent, his life wasn’t all grandeur—he often struggled to make ends meet and had a sense of humor that ranged from silly to downright cheeky. His story is a symphony of genius, hard work and a reminder to kids that creativity can shake the world—even if it sometimes comes with a lot of late nights and not nearly enough applause.
