In a film so intricately layered it could probably be used as a blueprint for an intergalactic sandwich, Mufasa: The Lion King promises to be both a prequel and sequel to that 2019 remake of The Lion King, which itself was a rather photorealistic update of the original. Set in the Pride Lands of Tanzania, it’s a tale Rafiki the mandrill will no doubt embellish as he recounts the origin story of Mufasa and Taka—two lions who, in a plot twist that even the best conspiracy theorists would envy, become as inseparable as brothers. Meanwhile, Simba’s still trying to figure out what exactly it means to be king, probably with a lot of grumbling and the occasional self-doubt. Timon and Pumbaa, of course, provide the sort of color commentary that could turn a nap into an existential crisis. Expect plenty of majestic lion drama, possibly with a side of musical numbers and the vague sense that everything is probably connected in a way that only a few great philosophers might understand.
