Robinson Crusoe is a famous book by Daniel Defoe. Robinson finds himself alone on a desert island and survives there by foraging for food, hiding from storms, wild animals and cannibalistic tribes, rescues a native whom he names Friday and eventual returns to England. Robinson's story is set at the end of the historical Age of Discovery, a time of colonization, trade and maritime empires (English and Dutch), with trading companies actively developing. Robinson, an English mariner, first arrives in Brazil and then sails along the coast of South America, where his ship is wrecked (the book gives the exact date of the wreck as 1659). Alone on the island, he creates type of small colony and attempts to bring some elements of civilization.
