Simon Yates, born in 1992, in the modestly charming town of Bury, England, is what you might call a professional cyclist, although that hardly captures the absurd dedication it takes to ride a bike faster than most people can drive. Alongside his twin brother Adam, who shares both his DNA and his baffling enthusiasm for relentless pedaling, Simon spent his childhood turning sibling rivalry into a sport all its own. By 2014, he’d joined a team called Orica-GreenEDGE—which sounds like it should mow your lawn but instead helped him mow down the competition—and in 2018, Simon triumphed at the Vuelta a España, cementing his status as one of the world’s best climbers, both of hills and metaphorical career ladders. Through all his victories and challenges, Simon remains proof that even a kid from a small town with a big dream and a decent set of pedals can inspire others to aim high or at least ride uphill with style.
