Space debris, for lack of a better term, is the universe's version of cosmic clutter—bits and bobs of human technological ambition gone slightly awry. It’s a collection of retired satellites, shattered rocket pieces and various space-age knickknacks that have long outlived their usefulness.

Now, occasionally, two of these defunct doodads will smash into each other with all the grace of an elephant in a china shop, generating even more debris, because apparently space is the place where broken things like to multiply. This orbital scrap heap is, quite predictably, a bit of a menace. Hurtling along at speeds that make a bullet seem like it's taking a leisurely afternoon stroll, this junk can puncture anything still functioning in space, which tends to upset the astronauts and scientists trying to keep their fancy gadgets in one piece.

Naturally, clever people with expensive telescopes and math degrees keep a close eye on all this floating flotsam, doing their best to dodge collisions. It’s a bit like trying to avoid bumper cars—if bumper cars were invisible and moved at 17,000 miles per hour. Meanwhile, space agencies are hatching plans to tidy up this cosmic clutter before we turn our orbit into the most hazardous junkyard in the galaxy. Because, after all, if we’re going to explore the final frontier, we should probably clean up after ourselves first.
