Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is the best horse cartoon ever, released in 2002 (and in 2017, an animated series based on it was released by Netflix). The story takes place in the 1870s, a time of bloody battles and negotiations between the rapidly advancing American nation and the Native Americans, who are unwilling to voluntarily abandon the prairies where they have lived for centuries. Spirit, a free horse, is captured by soldiers but refused to be tamed and escaped with a Lakota Indian named Brook. Brook also tries to mount him at the Indian tribe, but the horse refuses also. However, in the tribe he finds his love - a piebald mare named Storm. When soldiers attack the Indian village, Spirit rescues Brook and returns with Storm to his herd.
