Suzume no Tojimari is the story of Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old who probably only wanted a quiet life of studying and daydreaming, but the universe had other ideas. She lives with her aunt in the scenic quietude of Kyushu, but one night her subconscious decides it's time for a bit of a flashback—off she goes dreaming about searching for her mother in a wrecked old neighborhood from her childhood. Naturally, the next day she stumbles upon a mysterious young man who seems to think "doors" and "abandoned places" go together like tea and existential dread. Not one to resist intrigue, Suzume points him toward a forgotten hot springs resort and promptly decides to explore it herself. There, she discovers a strange door that won’t let her in, a rather unfriendly kind of hospitality. But things only get weirder: a statue-cat comes to life, the young man has his own curious agenda and a string of bizarre, possibly universe-altering events unfold. As Suzume unearths secrets that don’t just stay quietly behind closed doors, her courage is put through the wringer as she digs up more than a few skeletons from her own past.
