The Count of Monte Cristo is a famous book by the French writer Alexandre Dumas (written in 1844). It's very long - like a modern series - it was published one chapter at a time in a weekly magazine. The main character is Edmond Dantès, a young sailor who could have become a captain and married the girl he loved, but was unwittingly caught up in a political scheme to restore Napoleon to power. His enemies framed him and he was imprisoned without trial in the Château d'If. He spent many years there, but eventually met Abbé Faria, who dug a tunnel to escape. The abbot taught him many things and revealed the secret of a countless treasure. Edmond managed to escape from prison and found this treasure, then began to take revenge on those who ruined his life.
