In a world where robots are typically confined to the realm of mechanical precision and mind-numbing functionality, The Wild Robot takes a curious turn by introducing Roz, an unlikely protagonist who wakes up stranded on a mysterious island, entirely without instructions or purpose. As she dusts off her shiny exterior, she’s confronted with the complexities of the natural world—trees that don’t come with user manuals, animals that aren’t programmed to obey her, and, most perplexing of all, an ecosystem that doesn’t care whether or not she’s a highly advanced piece of technology. But in a most perplexing and delightful twist, Roz begins to learn from the very creatures who ought to be terrified of her—proving that even a robot, against all logic and reason, can develop something remarkably close to empathy. And yes, she somehow figures out how to be a mother to a small, feathered creature named Brightbill, because apparently, being a robot doesn’t mean you can’t love someone (or something) as deeply as a parent would.

As if that weren’t strange enough, Roz’s adventures teach an important lesson that can’t possibly be summed up in any easily digestible format—nature and technology aren’t mortal enemies, after all. They’re simply two highly contrasting systems that can, if you’re lucky (and possibly a little malfunctioning), work together in ways no one expected. The animals on the island—ranging from the oh-so-practical beavers to the not-so-sensible rabbits—don’t make any sense at all, but then again, neither does Roz and yet somehow, they all manage to make the most remarkable of alliances. What The Wild Robot ultimately teaches us is this: In a world brimming with chaos, unexpected friendships and the occasional malfunction, the key to surviving isn’t control, but understanding—of both the wild world around you and the robot inside you that can’t help but try.
