The Tour de France is the most famous and longest cycling race in the world, which takes place every summer on the roads and mountains of France. Cyclists have to climb the steep Alps and the Pyrenees. The race lasts about three weeks and the riders have only three days off. You can't skip stages - if you don't finish at least one stage or don't meet the set time - you are removed from the race. The cyclist who holds the current first place in the overall standings wears a yellow jersey. It can be seen from afar and everyone knows who the leader is. There is also a green jersey - for the best sprinter, a jersey with red polka dots - for the best mountain racer. Each rider is part of a team. Each team has its own leader and teammates help him: protect him from the wind, bring water, help in difficult times. The first Tour de France took place back in 1903 - it was invented to attract readers to a sports newspaper.
