William Shakespeare, born in 1564, in the not-so-bustling town of Stratford-upon-Avon, was the sort of person who could turn a quiet life into a whirlwind of epic battles, tragic love affairs and ghosts having existential crises. As the son of a glove maker and the owner of a remarkably busy imagination, young William probably spent his childhood juggling Latin homework and dreaming up the kinds of characters who would later make audiences laugh, cry and occasionally want to start sword fights in their living rooms. By 18, he married Anne Hathaway (no, not that one), had three children and soon decided the family glove business wasn’t quite dramatic enough for him.

Fast forward to London, where Shakespeare discovered the magic of putting words on paper in ways that would confuse future English students for centuries. Writing a casual 37 plays and 154 sonnets, he gave the world Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and enough new words to make a dictionary blush. His Globe Theatre became the place where laughter and tragedy collided nightly, proving that good storytelling can make even kings and jesters seem relatable. Shakespeare’s enduring genius lies in showing kids—and everyone else—that life’s messy, complicated and often absurd, but with the right words, it can all feel profoundly important (or at least worthy of a standing ovation).
